Summary

Fifty years after Jupiter became the second sun Lucifer, humanity has expanded across the solar system while strictly avoiding Europa as ordered by the monoliths. Elderly Heywood Floyd joins a luxury voyage to land on Halley’s Comet just as a second ship is forced to crash-land on the forbidden moon; the ensuing rescue reveals a vast diamond mountain formed from Jupiter’s core and brings Floyd into contact once more with the transformed David Bowman and HAL.

Clarke offers a lighter, more adventurous continuation that mixes comet exploration, solar-system politics, and further revelations about the monoliths’ long-term plans. While the novel is less intense and more episodic than its predecessors, it remains an enjoyable hard-science-fiction journey filled with plausible technology, striking cosmic imagery, and the quiet sense of wonder that marks Clarke’s best work.
