Summary

While on a Mediterranean cruise, Tintin and Snowy meet an eccentric Egyptologist and are soon accused of drug smuggling. Their investigation leads them into an ancient pharaoh’s tomb in Egypt and across Arabia and India as they uncover a vast international opium-trafficking ring marked by mysterious cigars and a sinister secret society.

This early Tintin adventure marks a clear step forward in Hergé’s storytelling, introducing lasting characters such as Thomson and Thompson and the villain Rastapopoulos while weaving mystery, humour, and exotic settings into a more coherent plot than the previous volumes. Though still somewhat episodic, it remains a lively and entertaining classic filled with the series’ trademark energy and invention.
