Consciousness Explained (1991) is Daniel Dennett’s ambitious attempt to demystify consciousness by rejecting the intuitive “Cartesian Theater” model—in which a central observer watches a unified stream of experience—and replacing it with the Multiple Drafts Model. On this view, consciousness arises from parallel, competing neural processes that are continuously edited and revised; there is no single place or moment at which contents become conscious, and the sense of a unified self is a useful fiction generated by the brain’s storytelling machinery.

The book is rigorous, witty, and still one of the most important works in philosophy of mind, though many readers find its dismissal of qualia and the “hard problem” unsatisfying. It remains essential reading for anyone interested in a thoroughly materialist, functionalist account of the mind.
