When a valuable Arumbaya fetish is stolen from a Brussels museum and quickly replaced by a nearly identical fake, Tintin notices the tell-tale unbroken ear and sets out to recover the original. His investigation takes him to the turbulent South American republic of San Theodoros, where he becomes caught up in a civil war, rival oil interests, and a dangerous race against two ruthless thieves who also seek the statue’s hidden secret.

Hergé delivers a lively mix of detective work, political satire, and jungle adventure in this early Tintin story. While the plot is more episodic than some later volumes and the satire of banana-republic politics can feel broad, the energetic pacing, colourful settings, and memorable villains make it an entertaining and inventive entry in the series.
