Chiapas is Mexico's southernmost state, bordering Guatemala to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, and the Mexican states of Tabasco, Veracruz, and Oaxaca. It features diverse landscapes including rugged highlands, extensive rainforests like the Lacandón Jungle, and notable Mayan archaeological sites such as Palenque and Bonampak. The state has one of Mexico's largest indigenous populations, with significant Mayan-speaking communities, and its economy relies heavily on subsistence agriculture, including coffee, corn, and bananas, alongside emerging petroleum extraction. Its capital is Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
