Jodensavanne Archaeological Site, a UNESCO World Heritage property in Suriname, preserves the remnants of an early Jewish settlement founded in the 1680s along the Suriname River. It features the ruins of what is considered the oldest synagogue of architectural significance in the Americas, along with cemeteries, brick building foundations, boat landings, and a military post. Together with the nearby Cassipora Creek Cemetery from an earlier 1650s settlement, it provides exceptional testimony to a unique Sephardic Jewish community that enjoyed significant territorial and communal autonomy in a frontier slave society from the 17th to the 19th century.
