The Colonies of Benevolence, a UNESCO World Heritage site spanning Belgium and the Netherlands, consist of four agricultural settlements—Frederiksoord, Wilhelminaoord, Wortel, and Veenhuizen—established in the early 19th century. Recognized in 2021, these planned communities were founded by the Society of Benevolence to alleviate poverty through farming and self-sufficiency, featuring orderly layouts with worker cottages, schools, and fields. Covering 4,571 hectares, they reflect an innovative social experiment in utopian reform, blending Enlightenment ideals with practical land reclamation, and remain a testament to early modern efforts at social engineering in northwest Europe.
