The French Austral Lands and Seas, a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Antarctic region, encompass a pristine wilderness of volcanic islands and surrounding waters, home to an extraordinary concentration of biodiversity. This remote territory, including the Crozet Archipelago, Kerguelen Islands, and Saint-Paul and Amsterdam Islands, supports the world’s largest populations of king penguins and yellow-nosed albatrosses, alongside significant numbers of southern elephant seals and Antarctic fur seals. Its isolation from human activity preserves a unique ecosystem, making it a vital haven for scientific research and conservation.
