la brea pitch lake

Pitch Lake, also known as La Brea Pitch Lake, is the world's largest natural deposit of asphalt (bitumen), holding an estimated 10 million tons. Located in southwestern Trinidad and Tobago, this unique geological feature spans about 100 acres (41 hectares) with a central depth of around 250 feet (76 meters). Recognized as a Tentative UNESCO World Heritage site, it represents a rare natural phenomenon formed by subsurface oil and gas migration, and its asphalt has been commercially extracted for centuries for road construction and other uses.
