neveh shalom synagogue
The Neveh Shalom Synagogue (meaning "Oasis of Peace" or "House of Peace") is the active center of Jewish life in Suriname and serves the country's small Jewish community. Originally built for Ashkenazi Jews in the early 18th century and rebuilt in its current form around 1835–1843, it features a distinctive sand-covered floor, a tradition symbolizing either the Exodus in the desert or the secretive worship of crypto-Jews during the Inquisition.
