O diretor do observatório astronômico do Vaticano, padre José Gabriel Funes, afirmou que Deus pode ter criado seres inteligentes em outros planetas do mesmo jeito como criou o universo e os homens.

"Como existem diversas criaturas na Terra, poderiam existir também outros seres inteligentes, criados por Deus", disse o diretor do observatório conhecido como Specola Vaticana.

"Isso não contradiz nossa fé porque não podemos colocar limites à liberdade criadora de Deus", acrescentou Funes, em entrevista ao jornal L'Osservatore Romano, órgão oficial de imprensa da Santa Sé.

Na entrevista ao jornal do papa, o padre Funes, jesuíta argentino de 45 anos de idade, cita São Francisco ao dizer que possíveis habitantes de outros planetas devem ser considerados como nossos irmãos.  [more]

"Para citar São Francisco, se consideramos as criaturas terrestres como 'irmão' e 'irmã', por que não poderemos falar tambem de um 'irmão extraterrestre'?", pergunta o padre. "Ele tambem faria parte da criação."

Perspectiva

Na opinião do astrônomo do Vaticano, podem haver seres semelhantes a nós ou até mais evoluídos em outros planetas, ainda que não haja provas da existência deles.

"É possível que existam. O universo é formado por 100 bilhões de galáxias, cada uma composta de 100 bilhões de estrelas, muitas delas ou quase todas poderiam ter planetas", afirmou Funes.

"Como podemos excluir que a vida tenha se desenvolvido também em outro lugar?", acrescentou. "Há um ramo da astronomia, a astrobiologia, que estuda justamente este aspecto e fez muitos progressos nos últimos anos."

Segundo o cientista, estudar o universo não afasta, mas aproxima de Deus porque abre o coração e a mente e ajuda a colocar a vida das pessoas na "perspectiva certa".

Padre Funes diz ainda que teorias como a do Big Bang e a do evolucionismo de Darwin, que explicam o nascimento do universo e da vida na Terra sem fazer relação com a existência de Deus, não se chocam com a visão da Igreja.

"Como astrônomo, eu continuo a acreditar que Deus seja o criador do universo e que nós não somos o produto do acaso, mas filhos de um pai bom", afirma.

"Observando as estrelas, emerge claramente um processo evolutivo, e este é um dado cientifico, mas não vejo nisso uma contradição com a fé em Deus."

People started believing the stories were real and actual history of events that actually really happened in the past, when originally the stories were nothing more than allegories for what people saw happening in the stars.

The ancients looked to the sky to determine what time of year it was. It was important to know what time of year it was. You needed to know when it was time to plant crops and when it was time to harvest the crops. As the year passed the Sun appears to make a journey through the constellations of the Zodiac. The entire story of Jesus’ ministry is an allegory for this journey. [more]

Míope, costumava usar uma esmeralda diante dos olhos para melhor enxergar seus interlocutores. O poeta ferrarense Ludovico Ariosto proclamou o início de uma Idade do Ouro com sua ascensão ao pontificado, mas voltou para Ferrara de mãos vazias; o volúvel Leão X, contudo, cumulou de honrarias, mesmo que em caráter irônico, mediocridades como Baraballo.

Diego de Landa Calderón (17 March 1524 – 1579) was Bishop of Yucatán. He left future generations with a mixed legacy in his writings which contain much valuable information on pre-Columbian Maya civilization, and his actions which destroyed much of that civilization's history, literature, and traditions.

After hearing of Roman Catholic Maya who continued to practise "idol worship", he ordered an Inquisition in Mani ending with a ceremony called auto de fe. During the ceremony on July 12, 1562, a disputed number of Maya codices (or books; Landa admits to 27, other sources claim "99 times as many") and approximately 5,000 Maya cult images were burned. The actions of Landa passed into the Black Legend of the Spanish in the Americas. Describing his own actions later, Landa wrote that:

We found a large number of books in these characters and, as they contained nothing in which were not to be seen as superstition and lies of the devil, we burned them all, which they (the Maya) regretted to an amazing degree, and which caused them much affliction.

Only three Pre-Columbian "books" of Maya hieroglyphics (also known as a codices) and fragments of a fourth are known to have survived. Collectively, these works are known as the Maya codices. [more]

Landa's Inquisition showered a level of physical abuse upon the indigenous Maya that many viewed as excessive, and was at the very least unusual. Scores of Maya nobles were jailed pending interrogation, and large numbers of Maya nobles and commoners were subjected to examination under "hoisting." During hoisting, a victim's hands were bound and looped over an extended line that was then raised until the victim's entire body was suspended in the air. Often, stone weights were added to the ankles or lashes applied to the back during interrogation.

Some contemporary observers were troubled by this widespread use of torture. Crown fiat had earlier exempted indigenous peoples from the authority of the Inquisition, on the grounds that their understanding of Christianity was "too childish" to be held culpable for heresies. Additionally, Landa dispensed with much of the extensive formal procedure and documentation that accompanied Spanish torture and interrogation.
